This is the sixth episode of the second season of the LACE Symposium podcast, the official podcast of the LACE Symposium for Dance and Other Contemporary Practices.
In this episode you’ll be hearing from pavleheidler (they/them) and Olive Bieringa (she/they). Olive will be sharing their contribution entitled Resisting Extinction on the 31st of July, a Friday, at 11AM.
Olive and pav talk about relations, between the macro and the micro, between feelings and aesthetics, between humans and rocks. And trees. They talk about identity as that which emerges in relation, about how one person, for example, may bring something out of you than another may not. About the way landscape can do the same. They talk about communicating non-verbally, about touching, and being, and dialoguing. We talked about Body-Mind Centering®, or goal-oriented and process-oriented strategies. And ethics. And childhood.
Close to the end of their conversations, when talking about the three As—art, academia, and activism—the idea forms, that we should be approaching all the As as amateurs, meaning the lovers of. Imagine a fourth A in the triangle of As. What if this symposium is not a meeting of experts, but a meeting of the lovers of art, academia, and activism?
Olive Bieringa works at the intersection of creative practice and pedagogy in dance, performance, somatics and media. She holds a BA in Dance from European Dance Development Center in the Netherlands and an MFA in Performance and New Media at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. She is a doctoral candidate at Uniarts, Helsinki. She is Certified Movement Therapist (ISMETA), Infant Developmental Movement Educator® and Body-Mind Centering® Teacher and Program Director of Somatic Education Australasia. She founded BodyCartography in 1997 in San Francisco.
