November 1st 1999
San Francisco, Bay Area
People gather in the Mission district of San Francisco every year on November 1st to celebrate the Mexican tradition of the day of the dead – Dia de Los Muertos.
We gathered to walk in remembrance of our ancestors, dressed in white and walking in slow motion. We began at the front of the parade and ended far behind with police trying to hustle us forward so the traffic could reclaim the streets. A walking mediation on death and dying, life and living. A cold cold beautiful night.
Performers in white: Alex Zaphiris, Chris White, Christina Lella, Jon Lustig, Kate Gibson, Laurel Carangelo, Lawrenzo Share, Olive Bieringa, Pato Draves, Riccardo Morrison, Samantha Beers, Sean Feit, Shelly Smith, Steven Kessler, Tracy Vogel, Wang PoShu, Zoe Miller
