March 8th 1998
Wellington harbour, New Zealand
Dressed in white we danced on the lighthouse at Point Halswell and huge marble Massey Memorial on the edges of Wellington harbour.
Point Halswell
the corner of the harbour
waves against rock
our orange flag caught in the fierce setting sun
Karen hops on her leg down the stairs and out to the checkered lighthouse
a boat passes
people become crabs and starfish, herons and seagulls
didgerdoo calls out over the calm water
waves begin to rack against the walls of the lighthouse
pathway’s awash
stranded creatures
sun touching under the hill
oranges turn to blacks
the city reflects back to us our stillness
the underwater path provides a challenge for navigating
bodies pressed against the metal wall
waiting for darkness as the light flashes a few metres above our reach
spinning out over the vastness of the harbour
Massey Memorial
pitch black
clothed in white
drumming
didgeridoo
no moon
dancing on a white marble mausoleum
alight with flashlights
stillness
movement
disappearing behind the structure
caught in light of a spinning fire
disappearing in darkness
